Beyond the common myth

What is real zaatar?

Contrary to popular belief, zaatar is not common thyme. The real zaatar used in Levantine tradition is a Mediterranean plant called Origanum syriacum, also known as wild zaatar or Syrian oregano.

Grown in Lebanon for centuries, it has a more intense and complex aroma than classic thyme, with notes that are herbal, lightly floral and subtly peppery. It's this plant that gives authentic Lebanese zaatar its unique taste.

At TamNature, we use the real Origanum syriacum, grown in the mountains of Lebanon and handpicked before being blended with sumac, sesame and fleur de sel following the traditional recipe.

Sumac (Rhus coriaria) and real zaatar (Origanum syriacum) naturally contain polyphenols as well as minerals naturally present in the plant, such as iron, calcium and potassium.
